Rhythm is a basic component to every natural living process. All people have natural rhythm, which often freezes due to unnatural and traumatic events. Drumming unlocks our natural right to feel alive and free.

Drumming has been used for centuries to release emotional stress, raise the spirits, enhance clarity and focus, develop co-operation and community bonds and celebrate significant events.

The Drum Cafe’s therapeutic work focuses on children and adults with physical, social, mental & emotional difficulties. We are involved in a number of areas of this nature, including street children, learning disabled, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), the mentally handicapped, juvenile delinquents, street children and the Autistic. The Drum Cafe actively supports women's drumming, drumming as a benefit for the handicapped, and worthy charities.

Benefits of drumming in a therapeutic context:

* Everyone can beat on a drum (requires no skill) and this gives participants a great sense of competence, which in turn enhances self-esteem.
* Participants experience a great sense of belonging.
* Drumming enables the participant to disengage from mental activity. Drumming brings participants into the present moment, which is a relief from mental stress. It can be equated to a form of meditation.
* Drumming frees up trapped creative energy and leaves participants with a sense of freedom, joy and an appreciation of life.
* Drumming can be used as a constructive way to release aggression and transform destructive urges into creativity.

The Drum Cafe Social also offers interactive drumming for schools and private functions.
